Are You A True Disciple Of Christ?
Disciple (MATHETES), a learner in contrast to a teacher, hence it denotes one who follows one's teaching, as the disciples of Jesus (John 8:31). A disciple was not only a pupil, but an adherent; hence they are spoken of as imitators of their teacher. (Vines Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words).
I am sure we are all in agreement, just because one calls himself a disciple of Christ it doesn't necessarily make it so. Jesus laid down the criteria for His true disciple in the gospel of Mark, chapter 8. "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me" (vs. 34). Three things are needful to be a true disciple of Jesus the Christ.
DENY YOURSELF. Everyone seems willing to deny SOME of themselves, but the true disciple denies ALL of himself. This means complete submission to the guidance of Jesus in mind, body and soul (1 Corinthians 6:19,20). Jesus denied Himself to the point of His sacrificial death on the cross. Are we WILLING to completely deny ourselves?
TAKE UP YOUR CROSS. This is not foolish pomp where we see people dragging wooden crosses (usually padded and on wheels) through town. Jesus wants His disciple to voluntarily accept the RESPONSIBILITIES of living what He taught (Romans 6:6; Galatians 2:20). The true disciple is a "New Creature" and should be willing to give up the old way of life (2 Corinthians 5:17; Colossians 3:5-17). Jesus literally took up His cross, we too must be willing to literally obey His commands. Verbal acceptance of Jesus as Savior does not save, we must obey and manifest our faith (James 2:24). Remember the old saying, "Actions speak louder than words." You can read about the great men of obedient faith in Hebrews 11 (James 2:18).
FOLLOW JESUS. The true disciple is one who has been baptized into Christ (Romans 6:3-6). This is just the beginning. Man is incapable of directing his own steps (Jeremiah 10:23); he needs direction and leadership. Many follow if it doesn't conflict with their interest or will. This my friend, is not true discipleship. Jesus provides the only direction (John 14:6; Matthew 28:19), and true disciples constantly look to their Master for every move. Are you following the lead of Jesus?
