The Christian Science Church
The Christian Science Church was founded by Mary Baker Glover Patterson Eddy, in the year 1879, in the city of Boston. Mrs. Eddy had been greatly influenced by Dr. Quimby, a man who claimed to heal through hypnotism. Eddy was well known for being an easy subject.
After Quimby's death (1865), Mary Eddy claimed to have received a revelation. In 1875, she wrote these revelations in a book entitled Science and Health -- these became the doctrines of Christian Science. Many people saw a striking similarity to a book authored by Dr. Quimby entitled Science of Man. Since 1875, many editions have been printed with a multitude of changes.
Mary Baker Glover Patterson Eddy was considered the pastor of the first Christian Science church in Boston; also referred to as the "Mother Church." All other churches were considered branches of the "Mother Church".
Mrs. Eddy's career was shady. She was married three times and once divorced. She amassed a great financial fortune all the time insisting that material things were not real. She was worth 3 million dollars at the time of her death in 1910. She had taught, "There is no death."
