Is There A Formula For Baptism?
Someone asks, "What do you do at baptism?" The Scriptures teach that baptism is immersion (dipping or plunging into water). Mark 1:10 John 3:23 Rom 6:3,4 Col. 2:12 Baptism is a burial, not sprinkling or pouring in water.
Another asks, "What do you say when baptizing an individual?" The Scriptures are actually silent on the matter. The empthasis of baptism is not on the person doing the baptizing, but rather on the individual being baptized. Every conversion in the book of Acts is silent concerning what is said. When I baptize an individual I remind those present of Jesus' command to baptize "in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matt. 28:18,19). We are baptized into Christ, by god's authority (Acts 2:38; 10:48 Gal. 3:27). I also like for those present to know that baptism is for the remission of sin(Acts 2:38; 22:16). There is no special spoken formula, only the "form of teaching" which is the spiritual death, burial and resurrection (BAPTISM).
